First off I feel it’s best to address the materials for this pencils construction. This Rotring 500 is both metal and plastic. Plastic being the barrel, clip, and push cap. The end between the barrel and push cap, the very tip an grip; being all metal. Now I’ve seen plenty of talk about hybrids like this, or anything that isn’t all metal being trash. However I’ve used all types and from personal experience the construction doesn’t really matter as much as certain critics would make it seem.Only way construction becomes an issue is if it was made poorly that it doesn’t function right and can’t handle the load of work put towards it despite being properly taken care of.Really it just comes down to preference and what feels more comfortable.Full plastic is cheaper and serviceable enough like the hybrid or full metal variants. But through experience my preference leans more towards the hybrid and full metal; simply cause I find myself liking metal grips better then rubber/plastic, and the weight feels nicer in the hand when drawing. That out of the way, let us get to the pencil itself. As said this is a hybrid, it has a nice balance of light and heavy between the plastic barrel and its metal ends. The grip is nice and has a good length of it, compared to my other brand pencils that have lesser length in grip.End part that is twistable to highlight what grade of lead your using, is a nice novelty.Discharge of the lead is smooth and doesn’t have any jamming. It’s a very comfortable pencil that was built well to work. I like this Rotring over my Staedtler, Faber Castell, and Pentel pencils.I would say the hype is real for this brand and is one I’ll likely buy from more of in the future should I need another pencil or replacement.
